Our Seventh Blonde Bombshell Is The Noir Dame, Gloria Grahame
Wednesday Sep 04, 2019
Wednesday Sep 04, 2019
My summer series The History Of Blonde Bombshells has one more blondeshell to go after Gloria Grahame, The finale will be the greatest blonde bombshell of them all, Marilyn Monroe. Thanks to April VeVea for being my guest for the series. She's fab..
Gloria was the queen of 50's noir. I absolutely love her. Gloria could be funny, poignant, a great southern dame, in The Bad And The Beautiful, she won best supporting actress Oscar. She had lots of insecurities about her looks, especially her lips. She's be in heaven today with lip injections. She thought her top lip was too small so Gloria would stuff tissue in her mouth to give her bigger lips, she also used cotton. Talk about dry mouth. Se had repeated surgeries until finally the surgeon hit a nerve and her top lip was paralyzed. I thought Gloria was gorgeous regardless. She was married to director Nicholas Ray. Their marriage was falling apart while he directed and she starred in A Lonely Place. The set was no fun. Humphrey Bogart was upset he did not get his wife Lauren Bacall to be his costar. The HUGE scandal were reports that Nicholas Ray walked in on Gloria and her stepson (age thirteen) in bed together. Anthony was sent away and Gloria Was divorced. She made a bunch of great noirs like The Big Heat and Sudden Fear with Joan Crawford. To say the women didn't get along is an understatement. Then came another scandal involving Anthony Ray. Gloria at age 35 married her former stepson aged 22 in 1960. It made a great Hollywood scandal and led to a bitter child custody battle with former husbands. Anthony and Gloria were married, had two children together and eventually divorced. Her marriage to Anthony was the longest, lasting 14 years. Gloria was a strong woman but cancer eventually got her. She died in NYC at the age of 57.
Thanks so much to April.

Thursday Aug 29, 2019
My Blonde Bombshell expert April VeVea and I take on our 6th Blondeshell the gorgeous and very tragic Carole Landis. I did a podcast over a year ago with Caroles biographer Eric Gans, and we covered Caroles whole short life. April and I discuss her career, her marriages, Rex Harrison and ultimately her suicide. Some people, even Caroles relatives think Rex had a hand in her death. We discuss it all.
Thanks to April for joining me in the summer series of the history of blonde bombshells. She is such a great guest and has a treasure trove of knowledge about classic movie blondes.
Mostly, thanks to the listeners. You are the best. Lots of great stuff coming up.

April VeVea is with me again to talk about our fifth blond bombshell (April calls her a pocket bombshell) Veronica Lake. We talk Veronica's rapid rise to stardom and her rapid decline, which was hastened by her alcoholism and mental illness. Veronica was disked by many of her peers and directors. She may have been a pocket bombshell, but she was a tough one. After Hollywood Veronica did some theatre and television shows then she just disappeared. She was discovered by a customer she had been waiting on at a bar. She was back in the limelight. She wrote a book and thought Hollywood would be calling her back. She was wrong. WE talk her final years and dying of liver disease caused by her alcoholism at the age of 50.
Thanks so much to April for being such a great guest.
Mostly thanks to the listeners. I so appreciate it.

My guest for The Blonde Bombshell series, April VeVea and I talk pin up queen Betty Grable. I have to admit musicals are not my favorite genre so I have not seen many Betty movies. Betty was another Blondeshell that had an incredibly pushy stage mother. She was truly awful. Betty became a star pretty early. She dated the notorious womanizer Artie Shaw, little known to her, Artie was also dating Judy Garland. Both were shocked when they found out he married Lana Turner. This guy was something else..Betty dated George Raft for two years, waiting patiently for him to divorce his wife. She realized it was never going to happen. She met Harry James at the Hollywood Canteen and the rest was history. We talk Betty's career, marriage, children. It's a good show. Lots of Betty things I never knew before.
Thanks so much to April for joining me.

I've done a couple episodes on Mae. April VeVea, old Hollywood Historian, and blonde bombshell expert Joins me and we focused on Maes later years. She really was the eternal blonde bombshell. She was 83 year old in starring in Sextette. She was playing a 28 year old. Go Mae. She lived life on her own terms, was a feminist and a one of a kind woman. She was unique, funny and WE both love her.
I want to thank April for doing the bombshell series with me. She's the best.
Mostly thanks to the listeners. You all are the best.

In the second podcast of the history of Blonde Bombshells, once again I'm joined by my friend April VeVea, classic film and classic blondes historian. She is also a blonde bombshell expert to talk about Thelma Todd. We delve into her life and career but mostly discuss her mysterious death. WE go into all the possibilities. Thelma was gorgeous, funny and beloved. Another tragic blonde bombshell. Her death is still subjected to debate today. We will never know the absolute truth.
